The Humane Society of Summit County’s mission is to care for and advocate for sick, vulnerable, and neglected animals in our community. At the center of this mission is the Intake Team: three dedicated staff members who serve as HSSC’s front line of care and the first point of contact when an animal arrives at the shelter.
“When an animal comes in, the first thing we determine is whether they meet our mission,” said Intake Coordinator Jamie Tavenier. “Because space is limited, we focus on taking in severely sick or injured animals.” These cases may include animals with broken bones, eye infections, open wounds, or those in need of other urgent medical treatment.
Once an animal arrives, the Intake Team ensures they receive vaccinations, bloodwork, and other immediate care. A report is then shared with the medical team, who may take next steps such as x-rays or surgery if needed.
The team also provides ongoing care for animals already in the shelter. When the doors open to the public at 11 am, they assist with new arrivals, some of which may not be a good fit for HSSC.
“A lot of people come in with healthy strays or owner surrenders, and we have to educate them of what we do and what our mission is,” Jamie explained. “Sometimes they get a little upset, which is understandable. It is a very stressful time for them, and they just want to help. If we do take in healthy animals, that does take away from our mission, as well as resources and everything to care for the severely sick and injured.”
One exception to this policy is for pets originally adopted from HSSC; those animals may be surrendered back to the shelter, whether healthy or not. Otherwise, healthy strays are referred to Summit County Animal Control and other local rescue organizations.
Intake Team members also work closely with HSSC’s Foster Coordinator to place kittens and puppies under eight weeks old, as well as critically ill animals, in foster homes where they can heal in a quieter, more comfortable environment. “We’re always in need of fosters who can bottle-feed kittens and puppies,” Jamie added.
By the end of a typical week, Jamie and the Intake Team have responded to countless emails, answered phone calls, helped reunite lost pets with their owners, and even assisted with cruelty investigations—a unique role that sets HSSC apart from other shelters in Summit County.
No two days are the same for the Intake Team. But every day, their work makes a meaningful difference for the animals who need it most.
