An update on a recent situation involving two dogs

A message to our community:
You may have seen or heard about a recent situation involving two dogs that has caused concern in our community.
Like many of our supporters, we were very upset to see the condition these animals were in. Images like that are hard to shake. We care deeply about their well-being, and situations like this are exactly why our work exists.
In this case, a Rescue organization brought the dogs to our shelter after removing them from a property. At the time, there were questions about ownership and legal custody that affected how we were able to respond.
That said, we know this was a confusing and frustrating experience. We didn’t provide the level of clarity, guidance, and reassurance that the situation called for, and we are truly sorry for that.
Our Humane Investigations team continues to review the circumstances surrounding these dogs, including the conditions in which they were found, and will pursue charges if cause is found.
We’ve seen reports on social media that the dogs are now in foster.
Cases like this can involve complicated legal considerations. While our instinct is always to step in and help immediately, these situations must be handled in a way that protects both the animals and the integrity of an investigation.
We also want to acknowledge the compassion of the person who stepped in, and of so many in this community who care deeply about animals. That instinct to help matters. We’re taking steps to make sure we provide clearer, more consistent guidance in moments like this so we can work together as effectively as possible.
Every day, our team works incredibly hard to care for vulnerable animals in Summit County. That work is personal to us, and that commitment hasn’t changed.
We’re grateful to be part of a community that cares so deeply and holds us to a high standard. We’re listening, we’re learning, and we are committed to doing better.
Sincerely,
Joleen Cicchinelli
